eXchange POP3 is a gateway (connector) that downloads messages from Internet mailboxes using the POP3 or
IMAP protocol. It then
determines the proper recipient(s) for each message and sends them to Exchange Server using the SMTP protocol.
eXchange POP3 can also receive Internet-bound messages from Exchange Server and relay them to the Internet.
eXchange POP3 consists of 2 programs:
eXchange POP3 gateway
The eXchange POP3 Gateway is the program that does all the work of processing messages. It runs as a process.
A process is a program that has no window interface. On Windows platforms that support it,
you can have the process run as a service.
eXchange POP3 administrator
The eXchange POP3 Administrator is the program that provides a user interface for the Gateway allowing you to
monitor and configure the Gateway in real-time. You only need to work with the Administrator program. It handles
starting and stopping the Gateway process.
Below is a view of the eXchange POP3 Administrator:
Most of the actions you can perform are available under one of the main menu's options.
This is the main toolbar providing control and other options.
The product is divided into different sections for configuring and monitoring the product.
As you click a section its details become visible in the detail view.
The contents of the detail view depend on which section you have selected in the section view.
This toolbar's buttons change depending on the section viewed in the detail view. Only options relevant to
the detail view are displayed.
The right part of the status bar displays the running status of eXchange POP3. It can be running, paused
or stopped. When stopped, the gateway process is terminated and you will not be able to view any part of the product.
When paused, you can view and monitor the product but it will not perform any tasks like downloading messages.
Some actions like pausing the product take a few seconds to complete indicated by the progress bar's activity.
If the section you are viewing in the detail view is a list, then this part of the status bar indicates
how many items are in the list.
